The glazed stoneware pendant lamp made by Raul Coronel features leaf-like cutouts for light diffusion and dramatic accents. Condition
The lamp is in excellent condition. It had been hanging above a dining table in the same residence since the 1960s. There are no cracks and no chips. It is a hardwired light with the original 68-inch long chord.
Provenance
This lamp was acquired from an art collector in Rolling Hills Estates in 2023. It is confirmed a piece designed and made by Raul Coronel by Brent Bennett, his friend, mentor, and partner for many years.
About the Artist
Raul Angulo Coronel (1926-2022) was a renowned Mexican sculptor, master potter, stoneware designer, and artist. Coronel was born in Mexicali, Mexico in 1926 and immigrated to the US when he was 14. During the 1950s, he studied with some of the most prominent names in the American studio pottery movement, including Susan Peterson, Marguerite Wildenhain, and Peter Voulkos. He created a wide range of pieces from the mid-1950s till 1985 including, pots, lamps, sculptures, murals, and architectural elements. One of Raul's best-known associations was with the Architectural Pottery Company which was established in 1950 by Max and Rita Lawrence. His well-known “Perforated Lanter” design was put into production by AP. His work can be seen in the permanent collections of numerous museums. He closed up his California studio in 1985.
